Histrory about Tungnath Chopta

History:

  • Tungnath is home to the ancient Tungnath Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed to be the highest Shiva temple in the world, situated at an elevation of about 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) above sea level.
  • The temple holds great mythological significance. According to Hindu mythology, it is one of the Panch Kedar temples, which are the five temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, believed to have been built by the Pandavas from the Mahabharata epic.
  • Legend has it that after the battle of Kurukshetra, the Pandavas wanted to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the sins they had committed during the war. However, Lord Shiva was not willing to forgive them and disguised himself as a bull (Nandi) to avoid them. The Pandavas found the bull’s body parts scattered across different locations, which later became the sites for the Panch Kedar temples. Tungnath is said to be where the bull’s hump appeared.
